Early Monday morning, July 13, 2026, a tragic incident unfolded at the Seville Penitentiary Psychiatric Hospital, where a 26-year-old inmate is believed to have murdered his two cellmates. The victims were aged 26 and 54. Prison officials discovered the bodies around 1:00 AM.

According to reports from Europa Press, citing sources within Penitentiary Institutions, the alleged perpetrator shared a cell with both victims, who were serving security measures at the facility. The Government Subdelegation confirmed these details to the media.

Investigators are currently exploring the possibility that one victim died from strangulation, while the other succumbed to injuries sustained from blows. The National Police's homicide group and forensic unit are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding these deaths, with the motives yet to be determined.

Union Calls for Reforms Amidst Staffing Shortages

The Independent and Civil Servants Trade Union (CSIF) expressed profound regret over the deaths, asserting that such an incident could have been prevented with more responsible management from the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions. CSIF has long advocated for the establishment of additional psychiatric penitentiary centers in Spain's northwest region.

Currently, Spain's correctional psychiatric care network comprises only three facilities nationwide, located in Seville, Barcelona, and Alicante. CSIF highlighted a persistent staffing deficit across all professional categories at the Seville center. This shortage, they argue, hinders the provision of individualized care and adequate surveillance, and points to insufficient specialized training for the high-risk environment inherent in such institutions.
