Juan Cremades, a 57-year-old from Almería, faced a terrifying ordeal when a devastating wildfire engulfed his home in Bédar. Returning from work, he initially underestimated the distant smoke plume, only to find his residence quickly encircled by what would become Andalucía's deadliest fire.
Trapped and Isolated
As the flames rapidly approached, Cremades managed to gather essential documents and attempted to evacuate his six pets. However, the fire advanced with such speed that it blocked his only escape route, forcing him to make the grim decision to stay and defend his home. The smoke grew so dense it impaired his vision and breathing, but he successfully brought four of his pets inside.
Describing his desperate measures, Cremades recalled, "I sealed everything tightly. I got into the shower fully clothed, drenched myself, and wrapped myself in towels." This marked the beginning of a two-hour battle for survival within the heart of the inferno. The fire ultimately claimed 13 lives, with one victim dying in the hospital, and ravaged 7,000 hectares before being stabilized.
A Fight Against the Odds
Cremades expressed his disbelief at the fire's rapid spread and the lack of official warnings. He recorded videos showing the encroaching flames, questioning the absence of aerial support. Inside his home, he witnessed the fire's progression through his windows. A refrigerated truck he used for storage caught fire, followed by the terrifying sound of six to seven butane gas bottles whistling and exploding nearby. He sought refuge behind kitchen furniture as the explosions continued.
Driven by instinct, Cremades continuously monitored the fire's advance. He noticed wooden railings on his terrace igniting, realizing the imminent threat to his entire house. Wrapping his face in a wet towel, he ventured out, armed with two bottles of milk, which he poured onto the burning beams. Though temporarily subdued, the intense heat reignited the flames. He then used five-liter distilled water containers, repeatedly dousing the beams until, on the third attempt, he successfully extinguished them.
During this frantic effort, he discovered a woodshed beneath his terrace was ablaze, explaining the source of the burning beams. He then grabbed five-liter vinegar containers and, from above, poured whatever liquids he could find—vinegar, beer, wine—onto the shed to combat the fire. Throughout this harrowing experience, Cremades relied on pure instinct, maintaining a calm demeanor and unwavering resolve, always believing he would succeed.
Aftermath and Reflection
Around 10:30 PM, the fire partially subsided. Cremades, armed with punctured vinegar containers, sprayed remaining embers. Believing the immediate threat was over, he gathered his surviving animals and fled. In a final video recorded after reaching safety, he lamented the devastation, stating, "In two hours, everything was carbonized." He left behind two small active fires, some chickens, his cat Maya, and his dog Athos, who did not survive. Miraculously, the structure of his house remained intact, but melted pipes and water tanks released an estimated 70,000 liters of water, a factor he believes contributed to saving his home.
Reflecting on his survival, Cremades pondered his purpose. He acknowledged the immense loss, stating, "I lost ten years of work, savings, and dreams." He recounted his experience from a local bar, watching charred vehicles being towed away. Despite the devastation, his priority remains his surviving pets and trees. He now faces the difficult decision of whether to repair his home and live amidst the ashes or seek a new beginning.
